July 31, 2013 - Wednesday

We left Oklahoma City and headed to the Little Rock KOA. There wasn’t anything we wanted to see along the way today so we drove straight through to L.R. When we got to Little Rock, Arkansas, we checked-in and got ready for the pool.

We relaxed by the pool for a couple hours and got ready for dinner.  Although everything was green here(much more like home), there weren’t any fire pits and the humidity was horrible. Rather than cook on the campfire as we had planned, we decided to eat at a restaurant that looked good. There was a restaurant just a few miles away called Cock of the Walk. We thought this was a strange name but apparently “cock of the walk” is an idiom for something or someone who thinks they’re the best-makes sense.  We read good reviews about this place and they served catfish and crawfish which was exactly what we wanted to eat in the South.

When we got there, there weren’t too many cars. It was off the beaten path and tricky to find. They’re only open for dinner most nights of the week and it was about 6:30 at this time. Our waitress was nice and the atmosphere was very homey and different looking. We still weren’t sure it would meet our expectations based on the reviews we read-it was hard to believe this place could be so delicious at first glance.

Chris and I ordered crawfish tails for an appetizer. It came with their homemade tartar sauce-great start, they were delicious. The really great part was that everything here was homemade and very Southern. We sat inside but within sight of the pond on the property. Our waitress brought us pickled onions and coleslaw. It’s a big compliment when Chris can compare coleslaw to his grandmother’s. Chris said it was almost as good as his Grandma’s coleslaw. The pickled onions, I was reluctant to try, but they were tasty. They tasted like pickles, there wasn’t any onion flavor left in them, just the crispness of the onion. She brought us skillet cornbread, too. This cornbread wasn’t sweet at all but it was the perfect dinner bread. We both ordered catfish and shrimp for dinner. Chris’ was all charbroiled and it tasted like something we’d grill at home. I’m not always crazy about catfish, sometimes I think it has a weird flavor, so I ordered mine fried just in case. There wasn’t a whole lot beside catfish on the menu. The catfish and shrimp were lightly breaded and you could tell it was done by hand. We were very pleased with this place-what a treat!

I’m done talking about food and making you all hungry…the rest of the night was pretty boring. We went to two different Walmarts(since Arkansas is the home of Walmart there are a ton) looking for pool noodles. We bought some groceries and a couple movies and headed back for the night.
